The North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry (NHIFP) was founded by women from five different religious congregations in the East San Fernando Valley in 1983. One of these founding congregations was Adat Ari El.
In 2012 we fed 42,000 people most of whom were unemployed, underemployed, seniors and the disabled. Homeless clients are the minority.
Our formal network is comprised of twelve religious institutions and thirty-five schools. We are also looking to partner with local businesses and civic organizations that wish to support those less fortunate in our community.
The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank is a source of low cost and some free food. Since 2008, the quantity of free food has drastically diminished. A large percentage of the food required to fill bags for approximately 500 families per week must be purchased. For this, the Pantry depends on donations. We are a non-profit organization under the auspices of the Valley Interfaith Coalition (VIC.)
NHIFP is entirely an all-volunteer organization including our board. We have about 200 volunteers at this time. It was the goal of our founders to “put themselves out of business.”
